Koo Wee Rup’s history is the story of pioneers who struggled to settle the land. What makes Koo Wee Rup’s development unique is that the first settlers were faced with a wild and impenetrable swamp covering 40,000 hectares. The swamp was eventually conquered and 400 kilometres of drains were carved with nothing more than picks, shovels and wheelbarrows.
Displays in the Koo Wee Rup Swamp Historical Society Museum pay tribute to those hardy folks who dug a future for the district. You can take a tour around the countryside to learn more about the area and the local industries.
